Class action against city traffic court operation

In this country you are innocent until proven guilty. In this city you can be slapped with a huge penalty for daring to exercise that right.

Yes, if you have the audacity to ask for your day in court, but are found guilty – well, you can be punished with $500 to $2500 in additional costs. That’s far above the penalty directly from the ticket, not to mention the normal and reasonable ‘court costs’ one should expect to pay. It is clearly a move to intimidate and is a apparently designed to reduce the caseload in the court system by scaring away as many motorists as possible.

Here is the text of the filed complaint

And a statement from lawyer for the plaintiffs, Paul Ogden.

Interestingly enough, Traffic Court’s web site says they may asses up to $10,000 in fees.
