That's something I considered in the past, but I feel a distinction exists - between homicides resulting from a clear act of violence and homicides that result from 'accidental' means. Now that blurs even more in the case of a drunk driver. There's a crime and a resultant death. So I asked myself "Do I include those or not?"

I have chosen to only record the deaths resulting from criminal intent. This more closely aligns with the 'officlal' reported counts and the main reason I began my own count was to see if the official numbers were accurate. News outlets sometimes vary their count because they have lost track (or as I learned this year, they don't count those in Speedway, Beech Grove or Lawrence which let's the 'Indianapolis' count appear lower). I count any that occur inside Marion County.
