The beginning of Summer was encouraging, as the number of dead people piling up in Indy went way down. For the entire month there were just 6 people killed. Evidently the near-nonstop rain slowed things down.
Days have switched to hot, sunny and dry and now the pace is heading back up. We had two last night, to kick off the August tally. The 14 dead in May is so far our bloodiest for the year. There were 7 in July.
Someone please cue up the Mayor’s talking point about ‘violent crime is way down this year.’ We need something to lighten the mood. We could easily shoot down the 2006 homicide record this year.

Are you noticing an increase in violent crime? Rapes, home invasions, muggings, and so on. It seems a bit harder to track that type of crime. And it seems that it’s rare for a mugging to get edia attention unless it happens in a unique location (park, convention center, etc…)
Totally unscientifically and without specific numbers, I still would say yes. The violent crime that is occurring seemsmuch more violent and premeditated.
It’s not the kind where someone walks up and says ‘Gimme all your money!’ They run up in groups and thrash people badly with brass knukles THEN go for the money. They surround homes and start firing into crowds and homes with powerful rifles. They start shooting undiscriminately on crowded streets with large caliber handguns. They swing 2×4′s at bicyclists. They exact reenge by stabbing someone for something that happened years ago. They invade homes and toss elderly people down staricases causing serious injuries.
The statisticians may prove violent crime tallies are down but they cannot say the extent of that violence is down. We have slightly vewer incidents in some categories but those we have appear to be far more violent than usual.
You need to change the name of this site to Mayor Dum Dum lies
Does this count as a homicide?

If the IMPD officer is charged with a DUI, wouldn’t that be two more homicides? Homicides don’t have to be murders as you know. Homicide with a vehicle is vehicular homicide.
Yes it will, if the prosecutor deems it so. I await his determination.
Paul: You said ‘two more’ – what other one are you referring to?
Reckless homicide among the counts.
