Keeping track of the bloodshed in Indianapolis… and other stuff

The year is winding down

Until the past few weeks, the bloodshed in Indy was wonderfully slow. But the ‘holiday spirit’ seems like a foreign concept to the Thug population — or else they misinterpreted ’tis better to give than to receive’ as there was a sharp uptick the last 3 weeks or so.

Soon we start over again. There are a number of 2011 homicides that are still incomplete in our database because the information seemingly never made it to the media. There may be ones we nave missed altogether.

If anyone can fill in any blanks or omissions, please drop us an email at info (at) bartlies.com — or add a comment to this posting.

Another one, barely makes the news

A sharp-eyed reader, Mr Anybody, alerted us to yet another homicide. This one (#106) occurred on Monday and only one news outlet (so far) has reported it or the fact a suspect had been arrested for the crime.

Things were pretty quiet around town for the past few weeks, but there seems to be a last minute rush to squeeze a few more killin’s in before the holidays.

Did IMPD have a patrol car stolen Saturday night?

That’s the rumor. We hear that this occurred on the SW District and the officer’s car was towed to the city’s maintenance garage where it will sit all locked up until sometime Monday.

The officer was on duty at the time. Did a prisoner slip into the front seat and drive off? Did the officer jump out for a foot chase and not secure his vehicle?

Inquiring minds want to know. However, the story seems to be being kept from the local media as it’s not been reported by any of them (so far).

Or perhaps it didn’t happen. Or Doctor of Public Safety Straub issued an order that it didn’t happen.

IDI leases Georgia Street ‘public’ space

Hmmm, a street that has always been open to public travel is now long-term leased to Indianapolis Downtown Inc., a private ‘Not for Profit’ organization.

This occurred just in time for the Super Bowl, naturally.

But what does it mean? The street is no longer a wide-open public space. It is under the control of a private entity. So technically they can control who has access to it, and when. Presumably, they can fence it off and control who can enter the space and how much it costs for that privilege.

I guess we shall see. But I expect this much-ballyhooed site, sold to us as a ‘public gathering place’ will suddenly become rather private.

Once again, the number of people killed in Indy has topped 100. And we have a full month remaining.
